Collection: Kirubel Melke Alemu

Kirubel Melke is a prominent artist from Ethiopia. After graduating from the National college in Addis Ababa with a degree in marketing, and a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Addis Ababa University Kirubel went on to exhibite extensively in Ethiopia and internationally.

Inspired by his mothers work at a garment factory, Kirubel Melke has focused on fabric as his primary medium, creating elaborate tableaux from fragmented cloth since his third year in fine art school, washed clothing hanging from a wire has been a recurring theme for his work using cloth as a marker for daily life.

Kirubel Melke explores themes related to education, social injustices, and the relationship between tradition and modernity presenting pressing issues relevant to contemporary Ethiopian culture. Ethiopia is years into a ravenous civil war, causing the deaths of tens of thousands and the displacement of millions. Artists and other professionals of culture are who already struggled before the civil war are now facing even more difficulties pursuing their work.
